Mercy was born on April 24, 1821 in Ohio. She taught school in Indiana. On October 12, 1843 she was married to Milton M. Vale. They came to San Bernardino in 1864. In 1883 they settled in Waterman Canyon. Mercy died in San Bernardino on January 29, 1903 and is buried at the San Bernardino Pioneer Cemetery.
